Boxing is sport. There are many sports. Boxing is a contact sport. And the benefits and reasons to keep boxing or to encourage you to start boxing are listed here. The history is further down the page.

Boxing is great contact sport for getting your body fit and healthy through enjoyable physical workouts. However, before you launch into your boxing training, here are some top tips.

The best ways to train

It is recommend that any health, fitness and training regime is adopted first by your GP (DR, Medical Consultant), your safety comes first before enjoyment.

*Find your gym

- Ideally you should have a local gym near by. Locate it, using our Boxing Club locater

* Some of the ways to train and prepare in boxing are

Bag Work 80%

Sit Ups 40%

Skipping 50%

Press Ups 40%

Running 60%

These are great ways to improve your balance, agility and movement.

* Gain power

Hitting the heavy boxing bags. The main purpose of the heavy bag is to develop power in your punches. Power in punching comes from understanding that the punch is not just coming from your arm or shoulder but from your whole body. These are mental key points to know

Visual - Imagine and learn your opponent

Feel - Feeling your body, the force, controlling the performance, your speed and power.

*Gain body mass

Weight training, sit-ups, pull-ups, dips and push-ups all help build that all-important muscle mass.

*Sparring

(Home boxers would have to visit the gym or club) with other boxers in your gym. If you are sparring, try to spar with someone that is on your own skill level.

The advantages here are less fear. Crucial mental understanding of fighting, movement, defence and learning the zones and limits of your own performance and getting experience.

* Shadowboxing.

Practicing your skills in front of a mirror and focusing on defence skills and correcting techniques is highly beneficial. To make shadowboxing work, the boxer must have a mental picture of their opponent.

Visual - Imagine your opponent

Feel - Control your speed and power.

Energy - Have the motivation & ambition.

* Switch boxing stances.

Changing which foot is in front helps the boxer become more versatile and able to switch tactics when required.

* Eat healthily.

A bad diet can ruin all that you have worked for on those hard training days.

Eat healthily

* Breathing Techniques.

When throwing a punch, breathe out. If the opponent manages to counter with a blow to the stomach when your lungs are full, this is enough to bring most people to their knees.

* Avoid overtraining

.
Constant punching stresses your joints, bones and muscles. It is especially puts strain on the tendons and ligaments, so plenty of time must be left between heavy bag sessions.

Moderation is the key, regular training, regular daily training and eating healthy are mixed with balances of life and will really get you into shape and feeling great

* Train to win

.
When training, train as though you are training for the heavy weight championship of the world. Your opponent is unlikely to give you any mercy so train as though your life depends on it!

* Getting involved with boxing

Books, videos, tutorials, take a look at some of our starter packages. Most Amateur Boxing Clubs (A.B.C's) provide coaching in boxing by fully-qualified coaches, as well as offering fitness and resistance training. Most clubs welcome total beginners, and people starting out.

The important thing to remember is to have fun, training is hard work, so train hard, but the rewards are longer lasting and more beneficial.
